Burberry is a British luxury fashion house founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry on the principle that clothing should be designed to protect people from the British weather. The company is well-known for inventing “gabardine”, a breathable, weatherproof and hardwearing fabric that revolutionised rainwear and for its Burberry check, introduced in the 1920s and now registered as a trademark.
Having fallen out of favour the brand was revitalised by the appointment of Christopher Bailey as chief creative officer 18 years ago. Along with then CEO Rose Marie Bravo and subsequently Angela Ahrendts, Bailey transformed it into a global fashion force though he had struggled to hold down the roles of both CEO and chief creative officer after Ahrendts left to join Apple in 2013.
Bailey bowed out of the firm at the start of 2018 giving way to new creative chief Riccardo Tisci, who was appointed by CEO Marco Gobbetti. The pair had previously worked together at Givenchy. Gobbetti arrived at Burberry from Celine in 2016.
