Marc Jacobs is a luxury fashion house founded in 1994 by the eponymous American designer, who made a splash in fashion by showing a before its time grunge collection for American house Perry Ellis in 1992 which earned him the sack (and later global recognition as a pioneer). In 2001, the designer launched his secondary line Marc by Marc Jacobs, a cheaper and more affordable brand but to the dismay of many fans the line was closed in 2015 as the brand faltered.
Store closures followed and in 2017, parent company LVMH (who invested in the brand in 1997 and appointed Jacobs as creative director of Louis Vuitton, a post he left in 2014) described it as one of its only negatively performing brands. However it’s never wise to write-off Jacobs who has been one of the most celebrated designers of his generation, and for good reason.
His latest NYFW show for AW19 was seen as something of a return to form.
