Established in the United Kingdom in 1981 by Sandy Alexander, Schuh is a high street footwear retailer known for stocking popular brands such as Converse, Adidas Vans, UGG Australia and Dr. Martens.
The retailer grew to prominence in the 90s and was quick to pick up brands like CAT and Vans, which were popular with its customer base, and at one point had its own magazine. Its Schuh.co.uk website has been trading since 2002 and attracts 2.1m unique visits and 22m page impressions per month (which it claims is the largest traffic of any footwear specialist).
In 2011 schuh was acquired by Genesco Inc. a Nashville-based speciality retailer. Genesco Inc. sells footwear, headwear, sports apparel and accessories in more than 2,455 retail stores throughout the U.S. and Canada, principally under the names Journeys, Lids and Johnston & Murphy.
A year later it opened our first kids only store in three shopping centres: Lakeside, Braehead and Liverpool. And in 2015 it opened its first store in Oberhausen in Germany and a second in Ruhr Park quickly followed. In March 2019 it announced the departure of its long-standing buying director David Spencer who left after 21 years. The company is led by managing director Colin Temple.
