Moschino crowns Adrian Appiolaza Creative Director

Storied Italian house, Moschino, has today announced that Buenos Aires-born Adrian Appiolaza will take the helm as its new Creative Director.

He succeeds Davide Renne, who suddenly passed away at the age of 46 in November, just days after he stepped into the role of Creative Director for Moschino.

The new Creative Director has reportedly recently moved to Milan from Paris to tweak the first collection to be shown under his name in February.

Massimo Ferretti, Executive Chairman of Moschino’s owner Aeffe Group, said in a statement: "Adrian brings with him a unique wealth of experience, creativity, and knowledge of the history of fashion that will be instrumental to write a wonderful new chapter in the adventure of the brand founded by Franco Moschino.

"I am deeply grateful to Massimo Ferretti for allowing me to access the world of Moschino as well as entry into a house whose walls exude a history that I am eager to hear. I am ready to transport the maison into a new chapter, with a theatrical touch, in the pure style of Moschino."

Appiolaza grew up in Buenos Aires where he was first introduced to the world of fashion at his grandmother's tailoring shop. At 21 he moved to London where he enrolled enrolled at Central Saint Martins. During this time he worked as a junior designer for Alexander McQueen and Miguel Adrover.

Commenting on his career, Appiolaza noted Phoebe Philo changed the course of his future in design. "She saw the collection with which I graduated and invited me to join her at Chloé in 2002."

Prior to his appointment at Moschino, Appiolaza most recently served as the ready-to-wear designer at Loewe for 10 years working under Jonathan Anderson.

His impressive experience also includes working under Clare Waight Keller for two years during her stint at Chloé as well as two years under Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton and four years under Miuccia Prada at Miu Miu.

Appiolaza, who has an extensive fashion archive including the previous works of Moschino, said: "I have always admired Franco Moschino’s sharp wit and irony: his creations were not just clothes, but a commentary on the status quo of his times, crafted from fabric.

"Achieving such a goal, going beyond the surface, and doing it with such theatrical lightness, is an extraordinary feat that sparked the imagination of a boy born in 1972 and raised in Buenos Aires who had never travelled before the age of 21."

Jeremy Scott stepped down as Creative Director of Italian luxury house Moschino after 10 years in the role in March 2023. Scott has been at the helm of the luxury fashion house since October 2013, presenting his first collection for the business during the fall 2014 season. According to the official statement, his debut collection "launched a thousand debates on the role of fashion in the annals of art, consumerism, and social commentary".
