Caryn Franklin and Daphne Selfe Speak at The Industry

The Industry London
01 July 2015

For more than three decades Caryn Franklin has explored the politics of image in fashion. As a journalist, former editor of i-D magazine and filmmaker, she has interviewed the full gamut of leading design talent, amongst them Yves St Laurent, Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano to name but a few. Today, she works with emerging designers promoting awareness of body image, an influence that has begun to make changes on the catwalk and in advertising. Caryn has slowly been overturning the standardised image of models and unhealthy practices.

Daphne Selfe is one of the world’s most recognised models whose career peaked at the wonderful age of 70. Breaking the mould, Daphne has become an iconic figure, a poster girl for a generation that doesn’t want to simply fade quietly into innocuousness. Daphne entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-working model in the world, continuously breaking new ground in an industry whose narrow views are set on perfect body image and a penchant for ageism.

As director of the world’s leading trend forecaster, WGSN, Lauretta Roberts will head up the talk, enquiring about the evolution of fashion and how nonconformists like Caryn and Daphne are an essential part of this progress. Can change really be made in an industry beset with ethical problems? Is fashion an open enough industry to accept criticism and learn from its mistakes?
