2020 in review: a step by step retrospective of the year that changed fashion retail for good

Lauretta Roberts
24 December 2020

However much some of us may want to, 2020 is a year we will never forget. Things got of to a lacklustre start for many after low-key Christmas and it got worse than anyone could have imagined.

A virus that appeared to start in China caused concerns that fashion supplies could be hit but by the time designers were showing in empty rooms in Milan come February as "COVID-19" reached Italian shores, there were fears the impact on business could be far more immediate and severe.

Perhaps it's best we didn't know that when stores were order to close in March that they wouldn't reopen again until 15 June or later and that they would be forced to close throughout the entire month of November and again, in many areas, ahead of Christmas.

The strain was too much for many, already weakened, retailers to take and we said goodbye to many names on the high street including Beales, TM Lewin, Cath Kidston, Oasis, Warehouse, Oliver Sweeney and Laura Ashley to name a few. Many of them live on online, of course, but they left huge gaps on our struggling high streets.

Debenhams spent the year enacting a form of death by a thousands cuts and ended up in liquidation. There is still half a chance that Frasers Group may rescue parts of it but as time passes that becomes less likely. And then there's Arcadia. Sir Philip Green's retail empire finally collapsed at the end of the year with the first brand, Evans, having been sold to Australia's City Chic Collective.

The hiving off of Evans signals that this once mighty group will be picked over and carved up among a number of keen bidders, many of whom are very keen to get their hands on its  prize asset, Topshop. While it's a sad tale it also proves that, for some, the COVID-19 crisis has provided them with enormous opportunity.

Relive the key months of a landmark year below and once you've finished, take some heart in the fact that it's over. 2021 will be rocky (certainly the first quarter) but a leaner, more sustainable, more innovative industry will emerge from all of this and if you are still in the game then there's a good chance you can play a part in that brighter future.
