JD Sports’ Dutch subsidiary declared bankrupt

JD Sports Fashion's Dutch subsidiary Sports Unlimited Retail, which includes European retail brands Perry Sport, Aktiesport and Sprinter, has declared bankruptcy.

A spokesperson for Sports Unlimited Retail said: "We appreciate this is a difficult time for Sports Unlimited Retail colleagues in the Netherlands and we are doing our utmost to support them."

JD Sports acquired Perry Sport and Aktiesport in 2016. Both brands were transferred to a new subsidiary, Sports Unlimited Retail, which was later offloaded to Iberian Sports Retail Group (ISRG) in 2021.

JD Sports already held a majority stake in ISRG at the time, and earlier in 2023, the British company acquired all the shares in a €500 million deal. This meant that JD Sports was once again the full owner of Perry Sport and Aktiesport.

The two brands have since been transferred to the Sprinter brand, with online searches for Perry Sport and Aktiesport taking users directly to the Sprinter website - which has now paused operations following the bankruptcy of Sports Unlimited Retail.

A statement on Sprinter's website said: "At the moment it is temporarily not possible to place an order. Recently the bankruptcy of Sports Unlimited Retail has been declared.

"This includes the activities of Sprinter Netherlands. The appointed receiver is investigating what future options there are for Sports Unlimited Retail."
