Cubitts launches 10th anniversary collection inspired by 20th century designers

Modern spectacle maker Cubitts has launched a new collection in celebration of its 10th anniversary featuring five new frames which pay homage to iconic 20th century designers including Gerald Summers, Eileen Gray, Donald Judd and Isamu Noguchi.

‘The Emotional Utilitarian’ collection is crafted using traditional spectacle-making techniques, “showcasing the 10-year evolution of Cubitts’ craftsmanship”.

From Eileen Gray’s architectural lacquer work, to the distinct bent plywood furniture of Gerald Summers, each frame celebrates tiny details such as bent lugs, an  interlocking hinge, hand-formed curves and custom lamination.

The new frames consist ‘Handel’ and ‘Kember’, inspired by Gerald Summers, which are part of the core collection, and three limited-run experimental designs, ‘Moray’, ‘Untitled’ and ‘Noguchi’ - each handcrafted and bespoke in the Cubitts King’s Cross workshop and inspired by Eileen Gray, Donald Judd and Isamu Noguchi respectively.

Tom Broughton, Founder of Cubitts, said: “Modernist design shows that functionality needn't be at the expense of personality. And so, as we reach our 10-year milestone, I'm excited to use the design language of our very favourite designers in a micro collection, for the first time.

“Each new frame has its own unique soul and character - the folded origami of Nogushi, the bold transparency of Donald Judd, the intricate lamination of Eileen Gray, and the delicate curves of Gerald Summers.”

The frames are now being sold online and across selected Cubitts stores for £150 for the core collection and £250 for the experimental collection (both with a single vision lens).

All styles are available as both spectacles and sunglasses, with prescription, non-prescription, and reading lenses.

Since its inception in 2013, the Cubitts design DNA has embodied modernist design principles, “merging the functional and utilitarian with beautiful, organic design”.
