Bulgari introduces Creative Director role for Mary Katrantzou

02 April 2024

Fashion Designer Mary Katrantzou, dubbed the "queen of prints", has been appointed Bulgari's first-ever Creative Director of Leather Goods & Accessories.

Katrantzou commented: "The rich cultural heritage and dual Greco-Roman roots of BVLGARI have played an integral part in my formation as a designer. I’ve always been inspired by the design codes and syncretism of BVLGARI, its mastery of colours and the depth of narrative.

"I’m deeply honoured to be the first Creative Director of BVLGARI Leather Goods and Accessories, leading the creative vision for this new chapter and elevating everyday life into a form of art."

Like Katrantzou, the company’s Founder Sotirio Bulgari was Greek. Her affinity for the brand was first confirmed after her high school graduation when her father gifted her a Bulgari watch. But, the Greek-born designer's connection to Bulgari was cemented in 2019 when the fine jewellery brand loaned her decadent jewels for her fashion show staged at the Temple of Poseidon in Athens.

Katrantzou collaborated with Bulgari earlier this year on the famed "Serpenti Through the Eyes of" saga. She reinterpreted its iconic serpentine emblem to create an exclusive bags and textiles capsule collection inspired by the snake's endless metamorphosis.

Renowned for her exuberant and maximalist creations, Mary Katrantzou will blend her jubilant style with Bulgari's historic glitz and glamour. Her first pieces created for the brand in her new role will arrive in stores globally this August.

Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of Bulgari, said in a statement: "Mary’s arrival makes us very proud... She shares with Bulgari not only the Greek origins but above all the search for excellence in the choice of materials, the way in which they are transformed with a particular emphasis on craftsmanship and a passionate love for colours.”

At the start of the pandemic, Katrantzou relocated from London back to Athens. Her new role will see her moving between Athens and Bulgari’s design ateliers in Florence and offices in Rome. Meanwhile, she’ll continue to manage her eponymous label, which is headquartered in London.
