Vinted combats counterfeiting with Item Verification service

Vinted, the C2C online marketplace, is bringing its ‘Item Verification’ service to the UK to give customers confidence when purchasing luxury second-hand products.

Vinted’s Item Verification service is an optional paid service that checks the authenticity of selected designer items. Each verification is carried out by a trained and experienced team of experts.

After Vinted acquired the Germany-based resale platform Rebelle in 2022, the two teams joined forces to bring Rebelle’s expertise for item verification to Vinted members as well. The team of experts will be based in Vinted’s verification hub in London.

The service costs the buyer £10 per item for eligible brands listed at £100 or above. At launch, the service will be available for Bags, Shoes, Accessories and Jewellery categories and across dozens of brands including Christian Louboutin, Gucci and Prada. The service will gradually introduce more brands and categories.

The fee includes the verification service fee and shipping costs from the seller to the verification hub. Additional Vinted Buyer Protection fee continues to apply to all items.

Members will see a banner with a diamond-shaped Item Verification badge once they choose an eligible listing.

Adam Jay, CEO of Vinted marketplace, commented: “We understand that authenticity and trust are paramount in the world of online second-hand shopping and we believe this should be accessible to all. That's why we've worked hard to provide our reliable verification service for designer pieces at an affordable price.

"Since Vinted was founded 15 years ago, our commitment has always been to make second-hand fashion the first choice for everyone and we see this new service being a significant step forward in our ambition to provide our community with the utmost confidence."

Last month, Barclaycard Payments published the results from a new study that revealed that resale and rental are booming in the UK with "recommerce" now accounting for 1.6% (almost £7 billion) of total retail sales.

The growing trend of more conscious consumerism has contributed significantly to the UK’s economy, bringing in £6.99 billion in the last 12 months alone.
