The Fashion Awards 2023: Jonathan Anderson named Designer of the Year

Lauretta Roberts
04 December 2023

Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson, who heads up both his own highly successful label JW Anderson and LVMH-owned luxury house Loewe, was crowned Designer of the Year at The Fashion Awards 2023 held at the Royal Albert Hall on 4 December.

Anderson led a roll call of prestigious names from fashion and culture to be recognised at the star-studded annual event that acts as the principal fundraiser for the British Fashion Council's BFC Foundation.

The evening, hosted by British broadcaster Maya Jama and musical artist Kojey Radical with proceedings brought underway by a performance from Usher, celebrated 16 awards. TFA nominees and winners are voted for by an international judging panel made up of more than 1,000 industry experts.

The evening started with METTE’s Pandora performance, followed with a performance from Cultural Innovator Award winner Sam Smith and ended with a DJ set by Skepta at the afterparty.

Other notable prizes went to legendary designer Valentino Garavani, who was honoured for his Outstanding contribution to fashion. This special award was celebrated with a fashion show of 24 of the most iconic red dresses to a backdrop of: "An evening at the opera with Valentino", the ballet which was filmed last month in his hometown, at the city of Voghera, which dedicated its theatre to him. Gwyneth Paltrow presented the award to his long-time friend Mr Giammetti.

The British fashion industry paid tribute to the late Dame Vivienne Westwood and her fearless approach to design and activism and recognised Joe Casely-Hayford with a posthumous Special Recognition Award for his incredible contributions to fashion and culture.
