Preview – Vogue 100: A Century of Style

Renee Waters
10 February 2016

British Vogue celebrates a century of its publication with an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London.  The entire exhibit is comprised of photography from the heavyweights such as Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino, Juergen Teller, Corinne Day and many others that have been commissioned over the years by British Vogue.

Visitors can figuratively walk through the timeline of each decade beginning with the ‘20’s through the Naughts and present day. Each room in the gallery hosts copies of front covers, photos  & videos of fashion features, and behind the scenes of various spreads. Some highlights are Kate Moss’ May 2003 “Bowie” cover by Nick Knight, Naomi Campbell’s December 1987 cover by Patrick Demarchelier, and the feature of Alexander McQueen by Tim Walker.

You can see the progression of the magazine from the early days of simply featuring fashion illustration to the current covers featuring not only models but today’s celebrities as well. The prices of the magazines have too progressed from just 35p in the earlier days to what we gladly pay each month to get our dose of fashion.

The exhibition opens to the public Thursday 11 February. For those looking for something extra, National Portrait Gallery will host Vogue 100: Late Shift on Thursday and Friday evenings of its run. The programme will feature talks from Alexandra Shulman, Henry Holland, Robin Muir and others as well as fashion films from the Vogue creative team.
