Pre-fall 18 trend-to-go: Black and white
Cast your mind back to the early years of this decade and you may remember a time when black and white seemed to have a stranglehold on retailer and designer colour palettes.
Other colours may also have been available but it was the black-plus-white combo that dominated store windows and set the cash registers ringing. And it’s back for pre-fall 18 as a powerful statement across categories.
Think of its as a styling story that takes in simplicity even minimalism, and gender fluidity, with black bottomweights teamed with the purity of clinical white shirting or the softness of broderie anglaise and cosy knits.
Or look at it from the viewpoint of decoration as white on black or black on white embellishment makes an impact. As a pattern story it can be found in the season’s love of checks and stripes but also in its florals, geometrics, abstracts and colour blocking. Or as a detail it works well with black buttons on white (or the reverse), contrast zips and maybe white lacing on black.
