New Look emissions targets approved by SBTi

High street fashion retailer New Look has had its emissions targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), all aligned to a 1.5C pathway.

The emissions targets include a short-term goal to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 and reduce absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by the same amount by the end of the decade.

Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions that are owned or controlled by a company, whereas scope 2 and 3 are indirect emissions that are a consequence of the activities of the company but derive from sources not owned or controlled by it.

New Look aims to reach net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040.

The SBTi approval follows the brand's ‘Kind To Our Core’ sustainability strategy launched in January 2022.

New Look says it will be focusing on its decarbonisation plans throughout 2024, as well as all other aspects of ESG.

Sue Fairley, Head of Sustainability at New Look, said: "The approval of our targets by the SBTi has been an aim of ours ever since we launched our sustainability strategy two years ago, so this feels like a milestone moment for us.

"The progress we’re making on ‘E’, the ‘S’ and the ‘G’ – in equal measure – is testament to the strength of our partnerships and the way we are collaborating with others, and we're excited to be moving towards our SBTi targets at pace."
