Mother Denim launches genderless capsule collection
Premium US denim brand Mother has launched a genderless capsule collection in support of LA-based charity Self Evident Truths, which promotes equal rights for those who identify as "anything other than 100% straight".
The 10-piece "Love Your Other" collection features rigid jeans that can be worn slouchy or tight, a flightsuit in soft twill, a flight jacket, a bomber jacket and sweats and Ts featuring Mx, the new address for gender neutral. Sizes range from XS-XXL and in waists from 24in to 36in. Retail prices for the line, which will be available in multi-brand stores worldwide and on the Mother website, range from $105 to $359 and a portion of the proceeds will go to the charity.
Love Your Other collection
Mother president and co-founder Lela Becker said she hoped the creation of the capsule and the campaign that supports is would "bring awareness to the ‘othering’ that goes on when people are different”. She added: “Standing up for self truth, equal rights, love and acceptance is at the very core of Self Evident Truth’s beliefs and ours.”
Self Evident Truth was founded by artist iO Tillet Wright and is currently leading a photographic documentation of 10,000 people in the USA that identify as anything other than 100% straight. The aim of the project is to "humanize a vast community through the simplicity of their faces, showing that they come in all shapes, sizes, races, and social strata, thus making it harder for people to discriminate."
“If we know that discrimination is based in fear, then creating visibility is the most powerful tool we have. Help people to know each other, and they will discriminate less,” said Tillet Wright.
A number of brands have been introducing genderless collections, including global giant Zara which unveiled Ungendered this spring. The line forms part of its TFG casual line.
