JD Sports to open flagship store in Silverburn, Glasgow

JD Sports has unveiled plans to open a new regional flagship store at Glasgow's Silverburn centre this autumn.

The two-storey 1,100 sqm store opens in November and will encompass JD's existing unit at the Hammerson-owned centre as well as a neighbouring unit, effectively almost doubling its floorspace.

Designed by an in-house team the store will feature a new fit out that is being rolled out across the sports retailer's estate. "We are excited to nearly double the size of our store and bring the latest fit out and concept to Silverburn. The additional space will enable us to offer a wider range of products to our loyal customers and realise the full potential of this location," said JD group acquisitions manager Warren Thompson.

JD, which is dubbed "the undisputed King of Trainers", is the latest in a line of retailers to invest in the centre. Premium multibrand retailer Flannels recently opened a 756 sqm store while luxury bath and body care brand Molton Brown opened a 107 sqm store.

Hammerson UK commercial director Iain Mitchell said JD's move to increase its space was mirroring a trend for brand's to prioritise "larger, experiential stores in prime locations". "The brand’s desire to upsize is a result of its successful performance at Silverburn and is a reflection of the centre’s position as the region’s leading retail and leisure destination," he said.
