Primark is to invest more than £100 million in its UK stores in 2024, as it marks 50 years on the British high street.

The value fashion chain, which saw sales grow 2.1% on a like-for-like basis in the 16 weeks to 6 January 2024, will open a new store in Bury St. Edmunds on 6 March, as well as stores at Teesside Park in Stockton-on-Tees and Glasgow Fort later this year.

Additionally, Primark will be unveiling some of its biggest ever store extensions across the country in 2024, with its Westfield Stratford store almost doubling in size to 81,000 sq ft, and its store at the Metrocentre in Gateshead upsizing to almost 80,000 sq ft.

While also relocating several Primark stores in Bradford, High Wycombe and Bolton to new and improved sites, 15 existing stores will be refurbished this year as part of its ongoing refit programme. This will include its flagship at 14-28 Oxford Street in London.

Kari Rodgers, UK Retail Director at Primark said: "We’ve changed a lot in the 50 years since we opened our first store in Great Britain in Derby back in 1974, but at our heart, we are still the same.

"We’re as committed as ever to offering the very best value on the high street and making great fashion more affordable and accessible for everyone. This latest investment will mean bigger and better stores, hundreds of new jobs across the country and shows our ongoing commitment to the UK high street."

With the new store locations and extensions combined, Primark is set to reach 195 stores and almost 8 million sq ft of selling space in the UK by the end of the year.

Two new Primark stores, in Epsom, Surrey, and Newbury, Berkshire, have also been confirmed to open in 2025.
