Happy Birthday Coco: Chanel in her most iconic looks

Lauretta Roberts
19 August 2015

Gabrielle "Coco"  Bonheur Chanel was born on this day in 1883 (she died in Paris in 1971). To celebrate her birthday The Industry brings you a gallery of Chanel in some of the looks she pioneered, all of which remain central the Chanel collections (and many modern women's wardrobes) to this day.

Chanel opened her first boutique in Deauville in 1913 (she had qualified as a milliner three years previously) and shook up women's fashion for good using everyday fabrics such as jersey and "tricot" (knit). Five years later she opened her iconic store in Paris on Rue Cambon and her Chanel No 5 scent arrived in 1924. Her 2:55 bag came more than than 30 years later in 1955 and is still one of the world's most coveted fashion items.

Other looks she pioneered included tweed suits, two-tone flats, costume jewellery (in particular faux pearls and items fashioned in the style of her favourite flower, the camellia), Breton stripes and, of course, the Little Black Dress. Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of the house since 1983, recreates these looks season upon season.

Here she is wearing them, better than any one else could.
