Wagamama’s uniforms undergo a sustainable makeover powered by Pangaia

Restaurant chain Wagamama is joining forces with Pangaia, the trailblazing materials science company, to launch a slow fashion uniform collaboration titled: 'Wagamama, powered by Pangaia'.

The partnership, which aims to set a new industry standard, merges cutting-edge design with sustainability. The initiative sets out to turn pre-loved T-shirts into fully circular, limited-edition hoodies to replace Wagamama employee’s uniforms.

Committed to more sustainable practices, the new uniforms will help reduce the brand’s ecological footprint, meanwhile allowing employees to wear uniforms that embody both street style and sustainability.

The new uniform is made from cotton fibres grown without pesticides and is treated with PPRMINT, a plant-based peppermint oil that prevents the growth of odour-causing bacteria. As a result, the fabric needs less  washing, saving water and energy,

Sustainable practices are at the heart of both brands. For example, Wagamama has committed to a 50% plant-based menu. Similarly, Pangaia is renowned for its environmentally conscious clothing manufacturing. Earlier this year, the science-meets-fashion brand revealed a jacket made with 100% recycled denim. By combining the latest trends with eco-consciousness, Pangaia established itself at the forefront of a broader cultural shift towards a sustainable future.

Eva Kruse, Chief Global Engagement Officer at Pangaia, said: "We are thrilled to join forces with Wagamama, powering their journey towards sustainability and circularity. Our collaboration not only highlights the potential for a circular ecosystem across all sectors, but also sets a precedent for other brands to join the movement as we co-design an earth-positive future—together."

All Wagamama team members have been encouraged to return their previous t-shirts worn as uniforms, which will then undergo transformative makeovers. The repurposed collection of hoodies will be available to both employees and customers in 2024.

As the restaurant’s employees are at the forefront of this collaboration, Wagamama is hosting a series of nationwide casting calls across its 164 restaurants to find 30 models for its upcoming campaign photoshoot shot by Kaj Jefferies and Louis Bamford.

Kay Bartlett, Chief Marketing Officer at Wagamama, commented: "We are really excited to announce our groundbreaking partnership with Pangaia to create our sustainable slow fashion uniform line. At Wagamama, we believe in the philosophy of kaizen, making small choices every day for big change.

"As two like-minded brands, this partnership captures our commitment to positive eating and positive living to ensure a more sustainable future.” She continues, “Our team members are the heart and soul of Wagamama, so it’s only fitting that they were chosen to model these stylish and sustainable new uniforms during the shoot to celebrate this collaboration."
