AI predicts the future of fashion

Recently, fashion brands across the globe have been embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to improve business and consumer experience.

Just last month, for example, True Fit, the leading AI platform that decodes size and fit for online customers, partnered with Shopify, the e-commerce platform builder, to help smaller fashion retailers solve customers’ fit issues.

A spokesperson at JOOR commented: "Innovations occur regularly in the fashion industry, whether that’s relating to trends or processes, but the current rate of advancing technology has the potential to create a dramatic shift once fully developed and integrated. Ultimately, this will improve processes from an industry standpoint, whilst also benefiting the consumer."

As AI’s popularity grows, experts at JOOR wanted to explore what the future of fashion may look like. JOOR used AI image generation as well as asking Chat GPT to predict the future of fashion to uncover the following results:

Wearables in fashion

A trend likely to progress in the future is wearable technology in clothing. Estimated to grow to a market value of 4.4 billion by 2027 (up 1,530% from 2018), the wearables industry is set to transition from its current wrist monitor form, to something more subtle.

AI in retail

AI clothing has seen the greatest increase in searches over the last five years, with an increase of 3,240% in searches between 2018-2023. This is projected to be up 538% between 2020 and 2027.

JOOR predicts AI could reduce the need for retailers to stock physical items, but instead allow the consumer to select material, style and colour and then 3D-print this to their own dimensions.

Circular fashion economy

The circular fashion economy is expected to increase 96% by 2026, from its valuation in 2022. While some brands are already offering the ability to have garments fixed in-store, or returned and recycled, this is predicted to transition with the development of advancing technology.

JOOR sees the circular fashion economy as having the potential to become much more mainstream, using AI to visualise a store returns process whereby the garment is recycled, redesigned based on new trends, and/or reprinted.

Sustainable fashion

Brands are under increasing pressure to produce sustainable fashion. Searches for sustainable fashion have risen 97% in the last 5 years and experts predict that in the coming decades, the vast majority of our clothing will consist of sustainable materials, such as Stella McCartney’s leather alternatives.
