ZARA turns 50 with cultural clout-worthy collection designed by 50 tastemakers
ZARA has officially entered its golden era. To mark its 50th birthday, the Spanish high street giant isn’t looking back - it’s calling in favours from fifty of its famous friends. The result? A collection that blurs the lines between fashion, art, and the kind of cultural cachet you can’t usually pick up alongside your £39.99 blazer.
The roll call reads like a who’s who of global tastemakers. Annie Leibovitz has lent her lens, Naomi Campbell her allure, Pat McGrath her makeup magic and Pedro Almodóvar his cinematic drama. Even Steven Meisel has swapped the camera for a pet carrier (naturally, chic enough for any four-legged muse).

Each creative has designed an object, from jackets to chairs or even a sleeping bag. David Bailey put his spin on an aviator jacket, Harry Lambert turned a hat into a tongue-in-cheek badge fest and Pat McGrath delivered the ultimate makeup bag. This isn’t just a capsule, it’s a collector’s museum gift shop.
Marta Ortega Pérez, Inditex’s Non-Executive Chair, said: "Each is a leader of their field, in terms of imagination, innovation and integrity. They share the same passions as Zara have since the beginning: quality of craft and the joy of design."

The best part? All proceeds will go to Women’s Earth Alliance, an environmental non-profit, matched by ZARA. There will be an additional €20,000 (£17,400) donation to 50 charities handpicked by the participating artists. The irony of fast fashion pledging allegiance to sustainability will not be lost on critics, but as birthday gestures go, it’s worth celebrating.
These celebrations will come to life ar Paris Fashion Week tonight, with Sarah Andelman (of Colette) curating a pop-up that doubles as an art exhibition and cultural salon. The collection will launch online on 6 October.

50 years after Amancio Ortega opened shop in A Coruña in 1975, it’s rewriting the rulebook again with fast fashion as cultural currency.
