Zara and Goldsmiths sign for autumn store openings at SouthGate in Bath

Zara has agreed to take a 32,000 sq ft store, and luxury watch and jewellery retailer Goldsmiths has penned for a 5,000 sq ft unit, at the SouthGate open-air shopping destination in Bath – both to open in autumn 2023.

It will be Zara’s first store in the city, located over two floors and set to sell an extensive range of products across womenswear, menswear and homeware.

Zara and Goldsmiths will join a selection of leading brands and high street retailers at SouthGate, including Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger, Lululemon and Apple.

Kate Lea, Head of Shopping Centre Leasing at British Land, which joint owns SouthGate, said: “Zara and Goldsmiths are brilliant additions to Bath’s thriving retail offering. Zara’s decision to choose SouthGate for its first store in the city is a testament to the popularity of the destination, and the work we’ve done to make the centre as attractive and engaging for customers as possible.”

Craig Bolton, President of the Watches of Switzerland Group for the UK & Europe, which owns Goldsmiths, said: “We consider a prominent presence in Bath as key to our expansion plans for Goldsmiths, and SouthGate stood out as the ideal destination from which to showcase our luxury brands to the city’s shoppers.”

The Zara and Goldsmiths lettings at SouthGate build on a "strong period" of leasing activity in the first half of the year for British Land, with one million sq ft of retail deals signed across its UK portfolio.

This latest commitment from Zara for bricks and mortar retail expansion comes hot off the heels of last month’s news that the retailer is doubling its store presence at the Metrocentre in Gateshead, with a new 42,000 sq ft store scheduled to open in late 2023.

SouthGate shopping destination in Bath, Somerset, is home to over 50 shops, 10 restaurants, 99 homes and an 860-space underground car park. It replaced a shopping centre which was demolished in 2007, and was developed and reopened in three phases, the first of which opened in November 2009. Phase two opened in May 2010, and the final phase launched in August 2010.
