Zalando has acquired Swiss mobile body scanning start-up Fision for an undisclosed sum.

The online giant has bought Zurich-based Fision, a computer vision software outfit that has developed technologies that generate 3D virtual bodies and clothing models. The body scanning app and virtual dressing room has been designed to help consumers see how a garment would fit on their body.

The acquisition marks Zalando’s latest move towards “solving the fashion industry’s key challenge of size and fit.”

Helping consumers find the right size and fit for clothes they buy online has been one of the greatest challenges faced by the fashion industry, Zalando says, as sizing systems across categories, regions, and brands vary dramatically.

According to research by Valuates Reports, the global virtual sizing market is forecasted to double from $3m in 2019 to $6.5m by 2025.

Zalando’s chief technology officer, Jim Freeman said: “We are constantly on the lookout for new teams and technologies that can help us provide the best experience to our customers along their entire fashion journey.”

We will continue to invest in strengthening Zalando’s tech capabilities in order to propel us on our path to become the starting point for millions of fashion customers across Europe.

Zalando said it plans to build a new tech hub in Zurich, growing the site to 150+ jobs over time.

The acquisition comes at an important time in the current retail landscape where COVID-19 continues to shift in-store experience to online.
