Yoshitomo Nara and Stella McCartney release second capsule collection

Chloe Burney
05 December 2022

Stella McCartney and Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara have collaborated once again, this time for a unisex capsule collection.

The duo previously collaborated for a Spring/Summer 2021 capsule collection, which was a global sell-out.

Yoshitomo Nara x Stella McCartney's wardrobe brings attention to "meaningful agendas", which are values of both the designer and artist share. The youthful rebelliousness of Nara's illustrations aim to ignite a new generation of changemakers and activists.

Nara is best known for his iconic pastel-hued, big-eyed children and animals. His malevolent figures speak universal truths and act as powerful tools to spread bigger messages. Nara has created nearly 40 individual presentations worldwide since his first solo exhibition in the US at Blum and Poe Gallery in 1995.

Commenting on the collection, Nara said: “Stella has an iron will, with heart. In our first collaboration, Stella chose which of my artworks she wanted to use and play around with them freely when integrating them into her designs. This time, I selected the artworks I wanted her to use and she once again had the freedom to place them as she wished in her pieces.”

The range aims to inspire a progressive generation of conscious fashion wearers. Conjured up in a neutral palette, it includes organic cotton jersey t-shirts, fleece hoodies, and joggers depicting Nara illustrations of gazing girls, children dressed as animals, and anti-war messaging such as “STOP THE BOMBS”.

The collection also includes vegan accessories made entirely from cruelty-free materials, including Elyse platforms, Loop trainers, Gaia espadrilles, and pool slides. In addition, canvas bucket hats, caps, and tote bags are all crafted from sustainable materials.

Yoshitomo Nara and Stella McCartney's range will be available online and in selected stores from 2 December, available until March 2023.
