{"id":227273,"date":"2023-02-23T10:47:22","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T10:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/?p=227273"},"modified":"2023-02-23T15:23:05","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T15:23:05","slug":"va-to-showcase-david-bowie-archive-in-2025-exhibition-featuring-iconic-costumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/va-to-showcase-david-bowie-archive-in-2025-exhibition-featuring-iconic-costumes\/","title":{"rendered":"V&#038;A to showcase David Bowie archive in 2025 exhibition featuring iconic costumes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">V&amp;A<\/a> has today announced it has secured the archive of music and fashion great David Bowie \u201cfor the nation\u201d, with over 80,000 items spanning six decades of his career to feature in a 2025 exhibition at the V&amp;A East Storehouse.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The archive features original costumes, fashion, handwritten lyrics, letters, sheet music, photography, film, music videos, set designs, Bowie\u2019s own instruments, album artwork and awards.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights include stage costumes such as Bowie\u2019s breakthrough Ziggy Stardust ensembles designed by Freddie Burretti (1972), Kansai Yamamoto\u2019s flamboyant creations for the Aladdin Sane tour (1973) and the Union Jack coat designed by Bowie and Alexander McQueen for the Earthling album cover (1997).<\/p>\n<p>Dr Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&amp;A, said: \u201cDavid Bowie was one of the greatest musicians and performers of all time. The V&amp;A is thrilled to become custodians of his incredible archive, and to be able to open it up for the public. Bowie\u2019s radical innovations across music, theatre, film, fashion, and style \u2013 from Berlin to Tokyo to London \u2013 continue to influence design and visual culture and inspire creatives from Janelle Mon\u00e1e to Lady Gaga to Tilda Swinton and Raf Simons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur new collections centre, V&amp;A East Storehouse, is the ideal place to put Bowie\u2019s work in dialogue with the V&amp;A\u2019s collection spanning 5,000 years of art, design, and performance. Image courtesy of V&amp;A<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From 2025, the archive will be made available to the public, from fans to school children and researchers, through the creation of The David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performing Arts at V&amp;A East Storehouse, in Stratford\u2019s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition and creation of the centre has been made possible thanks to the David Bowie Estate and a generous donation of \u00a310m from the Blavatnik Family Foundation and Warner Music Group.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson from the David Bowie Estate, said: \u201cWith David\u2019s life\u2019s work becoming part of the UK\u2019s national collections, he takes his rightful place amongst many other cultural icons and artistic geniuses. The David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performing Arts \u2013 and the behind the scenes access that V&amp;A East Storehouse offers \u2013 will mean David\u2019s work can be shared with the public in ways that haven\u2019t been possible before, and we\u2019re so pleased to be working closely with the V&amp;A to continue to commemorate David\u2019s enduring cultural influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>American musician and Co-Founder of Chic, Nile Rodgers, commented: \u201cI believe everyone will agree with me when I say that when I look back at the last 60 years of post-Beatles music that if only one artist could be in the V&amp;A it should be David Bowie.
