His resignation came after <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/jd-sports-and-footasylum-fined-4-7-million-by-cma-over-breaching-merger-rules\/\">the company was fined \u00a34.3 million by the competition watchdog<\/a><\/span> for exchanging information with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/the_directory\/footasylum\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Footasylum<\/span><\/a> in February, amid reports that Cowgill had a secret meeting with a counterpart from the brand JD Sports planned to acquire.<\/p>\n<p>In May, the company announced that Cowgill was <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">s<a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/jd-sports-boss-peter-cowgill-steps-down-after-18-years-in-charge\/\">tepping down after a review of its internal governance and controls<\/a><\/span>, deciding it also needed to accelerate the \u201cseparation of the roles of chair and CEO\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Former Reebok and Adidas executive Kath Smith has temporarily been appointed CEO as the group continues the reshuffle of it leadership team.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the appointment, Helen Ashton, interim Chair, said: \u201cThe Board was impressed with the high-quality candidates that we met throughout the recruitment process. Andy, however, stood out as the best candidate with his extensive Board experience including as a Chair and his strong track record in the international retail sector. It is a testament to the quality and attractiveness of JD that we have recruited Andy to the important role of Chair. JD is a great business with a clear strategy, occupying a unique place in the market and we look forward to working with him on our global development opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Higginson added: \u201cHaving closely followed JD\u2019s success over the years, I see it as an exceptional business, with a strong strategic position.
