New trade data has shown a sharp drop in imports and exports of textile goods between the EU and UK, signifying losses for companies on both sides, according to the European Apparel and Textile Confederation.<\/strong><\/p>\n Between January and September 2021 the EU recorded a -44% fall in imports<\/strong>, corresponding to almost \u00a31.6 billion (\u20ac2 billion) and a -22% drop in exports<\/strong>, corresponding to \u00a31.3 billion (\u20ac1.6 billion), compared to the same period in 2020.<\/p>\n The clothing segment in particular were impacted, causing a total trade loss of more than \u00a32.8 billion<\/strong> (\u20ac3.4 billion) over the nine months.<\/p>\n Whilst the UK continues to remain the most important export market for EU textiles and clothing<\/strong>, the trading situation is expected to get worse as the full customs regime between the UK and EU came into force on 1 January.<\/p>\n A study by the UK Fashion and Textile Association\u2019s (UKFT) from May 2021 revealed that a large majority of businesses and stakeholders in UK textiles sector relied on imports from the EU<\/strong>. It also found that over half of respondents said they had experienced cancelled orders because of the EU-UK agreements being implemented.<\/p>\n A vast majority said they expected increased freight costs and that they would pass the additional costs to consumers<\/strong> within the next year.<\/p>\n From the EU side Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany were particularly effected by reduced export trade, while Germany Ireland and France were particularly effected with reduced import trade.<\/p>\n EURATEX is now calling on the European Union and the United Kingdom to effectively cooperate to remove the issues in the EU-UK Trade agreement to ease trade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":103,"featured_media":193347,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[20821,6,10494],"tags":[46,22562,22564,10472,22561,15964,19735,17334,22563,10521],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
