{"id":189956,"date":"2021-12-10T12:28:17","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T12:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/?p=189956"},"modified":"2021-12-10T17:16:30","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T17:16:30","slug":"john-lewis-to-pay-sheffield-council-5m-for-store-closure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/john-lewis-to-pay-sheffield-council-5m-for-store-closure\/","title":{"rendered":"John Lewis to pay Sheffield council \u00a35m for store closure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/the_directory\/john-lewis\/\">John Lewis<\/a><\/span> has agreed to pay \u00a35 million to Sheffield City Council for closing its department store in the city centre just months into its new 20-year lease.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The news marks the latest development in events between John Lewis and Sheffield City Council over its lease and the city centre's regeneration plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The retailer surrendered its old lease for the building to the city council for \u00a33m in 2020 and was granted a new 20-year term<\/strong> at a lower rent and an agreement on the refurbishment of the building in return.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">In March 2021, the company announced it would close several of its department stores, including the site on Barker's Pool, Sheffield after losing more than \u00a3500 million in sales due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">According to the council report, the deal would grant the city council full ownership of the building \"with no cost impact to the city\" and that the money would\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">go towards a planned redevelopment of the site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for City Futures, Development, Culture and Regeneration,\u00a0at\u00a0Sheffield City Council,\u00a0said: \"We now have full ownership of the Barker\u2019s Pool building and site, and importantly, its future is now in the hands of Sheffield.
