{"id":167149,"date":"2020-08-16T19:40:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-16T19:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/mike-ashleys-frasers-group-bids-for-dw-sports\/"},"modified":"2021-08-06T12:06:52","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T12:06:52","slug":"mike-ashleys-frasers-group-bids-for-dw-sports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/mike-ashleys-frasers-group-bids-for-dw-sports\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Ashley's Frasers Group bids for DW Sports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mike Ashley's Frasers Group is reported to have offered administrators \u00a330m to acquire DW Sports, the collapsed sports retail and gym empire of former Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>DW Sports was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/dw-sports-to-be-placed-into-administration-putting-1700-jobs-at-risk\/\"> placed into administration earlier this month<\/a> and it was said that its retail business, which included 50 stores, would be wound down risking 1,700 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The retail arm <strong>had comprised 75 stores but some 25 had already been closed for good.<\/strong> It also owns 73 gyms, the majority of which had reopened after lockdown. Its Fitness First chain was not affected by\u00a0the administration.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/business\/mike-ashley-bids-for-dave-whelans-bust-dw-sports-cm8mplt5k\"><em>Sunday Times,<\/em><\/a> Frasers Group, administrators\u00a0BDO had been seeking to secure around \u00a320m for the business and it was believed <strong>Whelan's family might have come back and bought it without its liabilities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_150337\" style=\"width: 2132px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150337\" class=\"size-full wp-image-150337\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dave-whelan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2122\" height=\"1565\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-150337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Whelan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But Ashley's aggressive offer may keep them out of the picture, a source told the newspaper:\u00a0\u201c<strong>If they thought they were going to get<\/strong><span class=\"paywall-EAB47CFD\"><strong> an easy deal, they won\u2019t now,<\/strong> because they\u2019ve got competition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ashley and Whelan, a former professional footballer, have been rivals for years. <strong>Whelan had previously owned a stake in JJB Sports<\/strong>. He sold his stake to Ashley's associate Chris Ronnie in 2007 and formed DW Sports buying up a number of former JJB sites in 2009, after the chain went bust.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_116133\" style=\"width: 644px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116133\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mike-Ashley-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sports Direct Mike Ashley Jack Wills\" width=\"634\" height=\"371\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-116133\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike Ashley<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Whelan famously tried to discourage Ashley,<\/strong> who owns among a number of other chains, Sports Direct, along with Newcastle United Football Club, from trying to gain a foothold in the North.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley then blew the whistle on price fixing of football shirts which led to JJB being fined by the Office of Fair Trading in 2000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/subscribe-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-144088 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daily-Newsletter-Banner.png\" alt=\"Newsletter banner\" width=\"1680\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":139779,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[20386,20299,15588,11421,10836,9952],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.7 -
