{"id":166359,"date":"2020-05-12T14:17:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T14:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/londons-west-end-prepares-for-reopening\/"},"modified":"2021-08-06T12:05:44","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T12:05:44","slug":"londons-west-end-prepares-for-reopening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/londons-west-end-prepares-for-reopening\/","title":{"rendered":"London\u2019s West End prepares for reopening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New West End Company (NWEC) - which represents more than 600 retail and leisure businesses in London\u2019s West End \u2013 has <strong>announced its plans for a \u201csafe and sustainable\u201d reopening of shops<\/strong> in the district following a deep clean and installation of social distancing.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The guidelines have been designed to complement the latest government advice which says non-essential retail <strong>could begin to reopen in early June.<\/strong> They have been assembled by New West End Company to reflect input from hundreds of UK and overseas organisations, prioritising the safety for those living and working in and around the West End.<\/p>\n<p>The guidance includes <strong>flexible opening hours between 11am - 7pm<\/strong> and agreement to hold back on discount sales to regulate footfall and queues.<\/p>\n<p>Jace Tyrrell, CEO of New West End Company, said: \u201cOur priority is a safe reopening of the West End, and we <strong>continue to work collaboratively with West End businesses<\/strong> and local authorities to put in place clear operational and logistical plans to get back to work safely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving acted early to protect public health, it is <strong>right that we set an example for the nation\u2019s high streets<\/strong> in helping communities rebuild confidence in spending time together outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the West End\u2019s <strong>600 businesses prepare for a phased return of the district\u2019s 150,000 workers,<\/strong> New West End Company is also working closely with Transport for London and Westminster City Council to effectively manage foot traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Footpaths across Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent Street will be provided with clear markings to help visitors observe social distancing, while <strong>store visitor numbers will be closely managed with clearly marked waiting areas<\/strong> to the left of retailer entrances to avoid long-queues.<\/p>\n<p>As business operating restrictions lift, <strong>retailers have been advised to respect responsible promotional strategies,<\/strong> with discounting and sales kept online to avoid long queues and crowding.<\/p>\n<p>Restrictions on air travel are expected to see <strong>reduced numbers of international visitors,<\/strong> while London\u2019s workers and residents are encouraged to walk or cycle to rediscover the district, with the planned provision of additional bicycle parking and dedicated walking routes from key London hubs.<\/p>\n<p>Meave Wall, stores director at Selfridges, commented: \u201cWe are\u00a0really <strong>encouraged by the reaction of local residents\u00a0and the community\u00a0<\/strong>to the reopening of our foodhall, and the dedication of our team in keeping our customers safe with new social distancing measures in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s guidelines <strong>provide\u00a0helpful\u00a0clarity for colleagues and customers<\/strong> as we\u00a0continue to\u00a0adapt our services to maintain public safety.
