{"id":164843,"date":"2021-05-12T16:38:22","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T16:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/theindustry-fashion-live-retail-re-opening-one-month-later\/"},"modified":"2021-08-06T12:11:23","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T12:11:23","slug":"theindustry-fashion-live-retail-re-opening-one-month-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/theindustry-fashion-live-retail-re-opening-one-month-later\/","title":{"rendered":"TheIndustry.fashion LIVE: Retail re-opening - one month later"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks one month since non-essential retail re-opened, as part of the UK Government's roadmap out of lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the month, TheIndustry.fashion visited some of London's most popular shopping destinations to see footfall and shoppers reactions to the latest step in the plans for reopening the economy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Destinations visited include Oxford Street, Seven Dials, Carnaby Street, Covent Garden, Westfield London, Westfield Stratford and Bentall Centre Kingston.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TheIndustry.fashion LIVE: One month later - Retail re-opening\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oeN3U-JG6Ps?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>People returned in greater numbers compared to any reopening last year, with dedicated shoppers visiting stores such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/intelligence\/primark\">Primark<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/intelligence\/zara\">Zara<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/intelligence\/foot-locker\">Foot Locker <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/intelligence\/bershka\">Bershka<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Footfall in April 2021 was -32.7% lower than in pre-pandemic April 2019,<\/strong> compared with -55.2% in March, following clearly significant pent-up consumer demand for bricks and mortar stores.<\/p>\n<p>Covering the four weeks from 4 April - 1 May, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/reopening-of-non-essential-retail-in-april-delivered-huge-uplift-in-uk-footfall\/\">latest data<\/a> from retail experts Springboard reveals that <strong>footfall declined from 2019 by -41.5% in high streets, -39% in shopping centres and -7.4% in retail parks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Retailers have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/footfall-on-the-up-but-will-not-return-to-pre-pandemic-levels-soon\/\">warned they are unlikely to see a return to pre-pandemic numbers of customers soon<\/a> despite the beginnings of a recovery after non-essential shops reopened, according to new figures.<\/p>\n<p>Total UK footfall for the month to 1 May remained 40% down on the same month in 2019 despite the re-opening of retail, according to BRC-Sensormatic IQ figures.<\/p>\n<p>As Monday 17 May will see the return of indoor dining and experiences, it is anticipated that footfall will continue to rise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/subscribe-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-144088 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daily-Newsletter-Banner.png\" alt=\"Newsletter banner\" width=\"1680\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks one month since non-essential retail re-opened, as part of the UK Government's roadmap out of lockdown.
