{"id":164810,"date":"2021-05-10T09:10:19","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T09:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/jd-sports-acquires-cult-manchester-independent-oi-polloi\/"},"modified":"2021-08-06T12:11:19","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T12:11:19","slug":"jd-sports-acquires-cult-manchester-independent-oi-polloi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/jd-sports-acquires-cult-manchester-independent-oi-polloi\/","title":{"rendered":"JD Sports acquires cult Manchester independent Oi Polloi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JD Sports has snapped up cult Manchester menswear independent Oi Polloi in its latest acquisition.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The sportswear chain has bought the Northern Quarter shop at 63 Thomas Street, Manchester,\u00a0as well as all online assets, and<strong> JD Sports\u2019 executive chairman Peter Cowgill has reportedly been named as Company Director of Oi Polloi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oi Polloi founders Nigel Lawson and Steve Sanderson, who established the business in 2002, are<strong> reported to have stepped away from the business.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The news comes amid <strong>speculation that Cowgill is looking at stepping down from his role at JD Sports<\/strong> after 17 years at the helm, with him likely to move into a non-executive Chairman role.<\/p>\n<p>The speculation comes only a matter of days after Pentland's<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/andy-rubin-steps-down-from-jd-sports-board-and-is-replaced-by-fellow-pentland-executive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Andy Rubin stepped down as non-executive director at JD Sports<\/a>, set to be replaced by Andy Long, the former Chief Executive and current Executive Director at Pentland Group, which holds a 51.9% stake in JD Sports.<\/p>\n<p>Oi Polloi built has built a cult following over the years, selling brands such as <strong>Stone Island, C.P. Company, Engineered Garments, Beams Plus, Patagonia, Battenwear, Berghaus and Gramicci,<\/strong> often breaking brands into the UK market for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>TheIndustry.fashion reported in February 2021 that JD Sports had raised \u00a3464.2m via a share placing\u00a0to fund future acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>JD Sports has made two acquisitions in the US recently, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/jd-sports-acquires-167-store-shoe-palace-in-us\/\">f<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/jd-sports-acquires-167-store-shoe-palace-in-us\/\">ootwear chain Shoe Palace<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/jd-sports-acquires-us-retailer-dtlr\/\">sports retailer DTLR<\/a>,\u00a0as well as <strong>Leicester-based independent Wellgosh.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has also been in the mix when it came to the potential sale of Debenhams and Sir Philip Green\u2019s Arcadia brands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/subscribe-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-144088 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daily-Newsletter-Banner.png\" alt=\"Newsletter banner\" width=\"1680\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JD Sports has snapped up cult Manchester menswear independent Oi Polloi in its latest acquisition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":39,"featured_media":143652,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[9763,6,10494],"tags":[5978,5626,18152,15278,11951,18153],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.7 -
