Sir Philip Green's Arcadia confirmed its collapse into administration this evening<\/strong>\u00a0(30 November 2020) and its staff, suppliers and the industry as a whole now await the next chapter in its history. One thing is clear, there will be a scramble among prospective buyers to land some of its assets.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Despite criticism that they have suffered from a lack of innovation and investment in recent years, Arcadia (acquired by Sir\u00a0Philip is 2002) is home to some of the British high street's best known<\/strong> - and once best loved - fashion brands in the UK.<\/p>\n We take a look at how each began and how they rose to dominate the fashion retail landscape in the 20th and early 21st centuries.<\/strong><\/p>\n Without doubt the most recognisable of Arcadia\u2019s current brands \u2013 and the one prospective buyer are most likely to fight over \u2013 but Topshop grew from the humble beginnings of the basement floor of a Sheffield department store.<\/p>\n In 1964, the brand started life as a concession line called Peter Robinson\u2019s Top Shop<\/strong> as the department store chain sought new sales with younger customers.<\/p>\n The new line quickly became popular with large concessions across the nationwide department store chain, before bagging the first standalone Topshop in 1970.<\/strong><\/p>\n In the same year, it launched the Topman brand which soon garnered its own rapidly expanding network of stores.<\/p>\n In 1992, Topshop and Topman joined forces to open their flagship store on Oxford Street,<\/strong> which claimed at the time to be the largest fashion store in the world.<\/p>\nTopshop\/Topman<\/strong><\/h2>\n
