{"id":162799,"date":"2020-01-09T07:59:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T07:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/john-lewis-md-paula-nickolds-out-after-christmas-sales-slump\/"},"modified":"2021-08-12T14:06:10","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T14:06:10","slug":"john-lewis-md-paula-nickolds-out-after-christmas-sales-slump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/john-lewis-md-paula-nickolds-out-after-christmas-sales-slump\/","title":{"rendered":"John Lewis MD Paula Nickolds out after Christmas sales slump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Lewis was thrown into chaos this morning, as the <strong>managing director of the department store was sacked<\/strong>\u00a0and the chairman warned that staff may miss out on a bonus.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paula Nickolds, who has been with the employee-owned retailer since 1994,<\/strong> leaves just three months after Rob Collins the managing director of Waitrose also stepped down following a major restructuring.<\/p>\n<p>Her departure comes as the department store revealed <strong>a -2% like-for-like sales slump in the seven weeks to 5 January<\/strong>. She did not immediately comment.<\/p>\n<p>Nickolds was supposed to become the new executive director of brand \u2013 overseeing both divisions of the partnership \u2013 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/john-lewis-to-cut-75-head-office-jobs-as-it-merges-teams\/\">a newly created role which she was due to take up in February.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sir Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, who is also stepping down in February, said: \u201cAfter some reflection on the responsibilities of her proposed new role, we have decided together that the <strong>implementation of the future partnership structure in February is the right time for her to move on<\/strong> and she will leave the partnership with our gratitude and best wishes for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the full year, <strong>we expect profits in Waitrose &amp; Partners to be broadly in line with last year<\/strong>. In John Lewis &amp; Partners we will reverse the losses incurred in the first half of the year, but profits will be substantially down on last year. We therefore expect that partnership profit before exceptionals will be significantly lower than last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThe partnership board <strong>will meet in February to decide whether it is prudent to pay a partnership bonus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision will be influenced by our level of profitability, planned investment and maintaining the strength of our balance sheet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nickolds was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/john-lewis-appoints-paula-nickolds-md\/\">appointed MD of John Lewis in October 2016,<\/a> having previously been commercial director.
