The downturn in the UK retail sector has significantly slowed down and shops could see retail sales growth return next month<\/strong>, according to new figures.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The CBI\u2019s monthly survey of British retailers has found that sales were \u201cbroadly unchanged\u201d in November,<\/strong> after six months of falling demand.<\/p>\n However, the industry was still in decline, with 41% of retailers reporting a decline in sales<\/strong> while 38% of respondents saw a rise, giving a balance of -3 for the month against the same period last year.<\/p>\n Nevertheless, this was the highest performance in seven months<\/strong> as the run-up to Christmas appeared to improve the situation for high street retailers.<\/p>\n Sales are also predicted to continue to improve, with the CBI saying it expects a return to growth in December.<\/strong><\/p>\n Retailers said they expect sales volumes to increase for the year to December, with 44% expecting to see a rise in sales<\/strong> and just 23% predicting a decline.<\/p>\n The figures were less positive for online retailers, with online sales growing at the slowest pace since June<\/strong>, while wholesale sales fell at the sharpest rate in more than seven years.<\/p>\n Suppliers also had less to cheer about as they saw the number of new orders fall for the seventh consecutive month<\/strong> in annual terms.<\/p>\n Anna Leach, deputy chief economist at the CBI, said: \u201cRetailers are entering the festive season with a bit of hope<\/strong> that sales will head up, with the strongest expectations in half a year.<\/p>\n \u201cActual sales have also stabilised and have nudged above average for the time of year and employment has stopped falling after three years of decline.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cBut Brexit uncertainty continues to weigh on investment plans<\/strong> for the year ahead which remain weak.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":68,"featured_media":151831,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[10585,6,10494],"tags":[15147,46,13737],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
