Papas closes stores after collapsing into administration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mamas &amp; Papas has collapsed into administration with<strong> six store closures, just days after rival Mothercare went bust.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The retailer has <strong>made 73 staff redundant with immediate effect<\/strong> and has put 54 further jobs at risk within its head office.<\/p>\n<p>Bluegem Capital, which has owned the business since 2014, has bought the company assets through a pre-pack administration which will cut some of its financial liabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Mamas &amp; Papas said its unprofitable stores in <strong>Aberdeen, Preston, Milton Keynes, Lincoln, Leamington and Fareham<\/strong> closed on Friday as a result.<\/p>\n<p>The administration, conducted by Deloitte, came after it was put under pressure as its shoppers moved online and high street footfall continued to decline.<\/p>\n<p>The company, which had <strong>27 stores and three concessions,<\/strong> said its remaining stores will continue to trade as normal, as well as its digital, wholesale and concession arms.<\/p>\n<p>However, it has announced plans to<strong> \u201csimplify\u201d operations at its head office in Huddersfield<\/strong>, which could lead to further job losses.<\/p>\n<p>It was<strong> founded in 1981 in Huddersfield by David and Luisa Scacchetti<\/strong> and rapidly grew but was bought by Bluegem after a restructuring process five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Riccardo Cincotta, executive chairman of Mamas &amp; Papas, said: \u201cThese actions are <strong>always difficult but they are also necessary<\/strong> in a challenging market to ensure Mamas &amp; Papas achieves its considerable future potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain fully focused on <strong>maintaining our position as the UK\u2019s most popular nursery brand.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to review our store portfolio in the light of customers\u2019 changing behaviour and we remain<strong> fully committed to an omni-channel offering<\/strong> that reflects their evolving needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The retailer said <strong>all customer orders, including outstanding orders placed with the closed stores, are unaffected<\/strong> by the administration and will be \u201cdelivered on time without disruption\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Capello, managing partner at Bluegem Capital, said: \u201cAs long-term owners of the business, we remain <strong>fully committed to supporting Mamas &amp; Papas<\/strong> on its growth journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe business <strong>now has a solid platform from which to achieve this ambition,<\/strong> so we can look forward to the future with confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/mothercare-to-close-all-uk-stores-as-administrators-appointed\/\">Rival Mothercare collapsed on Monday,<\/a> leading to the closure of its 79 stores and loss of 2,800 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The pair are the most recent casualties of the downturn on UK high streets which has seen a raft of administrations in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Clare Boardman, joint administrator at Deloitte, said: \u201cMamas &amp; Papas (Retail) Limited has been <strong>seeking to address challenges that many bricks and mortar retailers<\/strong> are currently experiencing on the high street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe successful sale has enabled Mamas &amp; Papas\u2019 retail portfolio to be streamlined while <strong>ensuring employment continues for 506 staff,<\/strong> although unfortunately not all jobs could be saved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to thank all employees for their ongoing support at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The administration is the second retail failure for Bluegem, which <strong>was the previous owner of Jack Wills<\/strong> before it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/mike-ashley-wins-bidding-war-for-jack-wills\/\">collapsed into administration<\/a> and was bought by Mike Ashley\u2019s Sports Direct in August.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":68,"featured_media":151705,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[10585,6,10494],"tags":[13267,15459,10822,9954,11025,15458,15457,4637,11455],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Mamas &amp;
