Mike Ashley\u2019s Sports Direct has called for a wide-ranging investigation into the sportswear industry, complaining about the dominance and Adidas and Nike.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The firm said the \u201cmust-have\u201d brands hold a bargaining position<\/strong> which allows them to control supply and the price of their products.<\/p>\n

Sportswear giant Adidas has blocked Ashley\u2019s retail empire from selling some of its products<\/strong>, Sports Direct said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSports Direct believes that the industry as a whole would benefit from a wide market review<\/strong> by the appropriate authorities in both the UK and Europe,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Ashley\u2019s grievance stretches as far back as 2013 when the German giant withdrew replica Chelsea shirts<\/strong> from Sports Direct stores.<\/p>\n

The retailer said the dominance of Nike and Adidas allows them to \u201c[refuse] to supply key products \u2026 with no apparent justification<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The calls come after the Sunday Times<\/em> revealed<\/a> that Nike has told several independent retailers it will pull its products from their stores.<\/p>\n

It is part of a move by the US giant to reduce the number of retailers it uses and push customers towards its own website.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAll those companies that built a business on the back of Nike and Adidas are toast<\/strong> \u2014 there\u2019s no way they can replace that [business],\u201d a source told the paper.<\/p>\n

Last month, Sports Direct complained<\/a> that its rival JD Sports\u2019 planned \u00a390 million takeover of Footasylum could reduce Ashley\u2019s access to the top brands.<\/p>\n

In the past, Adidas and Nike have preferred to work with JD Sports<\/strong>, but Sports Direct has attempted to make inroads, appointing former Nike executive David Daly as chairman of the its board.<\/p>\n

\u201cSports Direct has consistently aimed to provide the widest range of products at attractive prices and will continue to work constructively with all its suppliers<\/strong> to enhance its product offering for the benefit of consumers,\u201d the company said on Monday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
