Outdoor retailer Mountain Warehouse has defied the high street gloom and reported record Christmas trading following a surge in sales of socks, fleeces and gloves.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 13 weeks to 6 January, Mountain Warehouse saw revenue jump almost 12% to \u00a384.7m<\/strong>. The privately owned group also enjoyed a bumper Black Friday, with total sales up 20% and online sales passing \u00a31m on a single day for the first time in its history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n CEO Mark Neale said this puts the business on track for record full-year profits. \u201cThe business is continuing to perform strongly despite the economic backdrop.<\/strong> The prior year\u2019s performance was exceptional due to the cold weather and widespread snow we saw in the run-up to Christmas 2017.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m therefore really pleased to report this year\u2019s strong performance despite the unusually mild weather we have been experiencing. This puts us well on course for another record year.\u201d<\/p>\n Last year the retailer, which employs around 3,000 people, grew its sales by 22% to \u00a3225.3m<\/strong> and booked earnings of \u00a332.6m.<\/p>\n Mountain Warehouse served over three million customers during the 13-week festive period, with bestsellers including over 500,000 pairs of socks, almost a million fleeces,<\/strong> over 500,000 winter jackets and over 400,000 pairs of gloves.<\/p>\n The chain, which started with a single store in 1997, now has 340 in nine counties and plans to reach 400 over the next 18 months<\/strong>, creating 600 new jobs.<\/p>\n The group also opened a new customer services centre in Coventry in November to support online growth.<\/p>\n Last year Mountain Warehouse offloaded a 20% stake to private equity firm Inflexion,<\/strong> giving it an enterprise value of \u00a3310m.<\/p>\n Image: Press Association<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[10585,6,10494],"tags":[9951,13918,13919,13920,11455],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
