{"id":158582,"date":"2016-11-13T07:31:29","date_gmt":"2016-11-13T07:31:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/whistles-lost-15-5m-before-takeover\/"},"modified":"2021-08-12T13:44:28","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T13:44:28","slug":"whistles-lost-15-5m-before-takeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/whistles-lost-15-5m-before-takeover\/","title":{"rendered":"Whistles lost \u00a315.5m before takeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Accounts filed at Companies House show that premium high street retailer Whistles <strong>racked up losses of \u00a315.5m before its takeover<\/strong> by South Africa's Foschini Group in March.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the 12 months to 30 January Whistles posted a pre-tax loss of \u00a315.5m (losses in the previous year had been \u00a32.4m) on <strong>sales up 1% at\u00a0\u00a362.2m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/business\/whistles-racks-up-big-losses-qk3rfcphd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to <em>The Sunday Times<\/em><\/a>, Whistles, which operates 46 stores, 76 concessions and an e-store, had blamed the losses on a difficult trading environment and the <strong>detrimental effects of the Black Friday<\/strong> promotion. Its own sale had also performed poorly, compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Whistles was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/\/whistles-acquired-by-foschini-group\/\">acquired by Foschini Group<\/a>, which <strong>also owns British womenswear brand Phase Eight<\/strong>, in March of this year. At the time its CEO Jane Shepherdson, who had led a buyout of the business in 2008 from previous owner Aurora Fashions, retained her 20% stake.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79166\" style=\"width: 836px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79166\" class=\" wp-image-79166\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jane-Shepherdson-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"Jane Shepherdson Whistles\" width=\"826\" height=\"449\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-79166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jane Shepherdson: departed in September<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theindustry.fashion\/\/whistles-ceo-jane-shepherdson-steps\/\">by September Shepherdson had stood down<\/a>\u00a0and her responsibilities at the company were passed to her team\u00a0led by brand director Helen Williamson, managing director Justin Hampshire, and creative director Nick Passmore.
