Westfield taps Central Saint Martins talent to rethink its UK retail destinations
Westfield has partnered with Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, on a seven-week programme exploring the future of its UK retail destinations and mixed-use urban environments.
Running from April to June 2026, the programme involves approximately 40 postgraduate students from Central Saint Martins' MA Innovation Management course. Working in cross-disciplinary teams spanning design, strategy, technology and cultural research, students are using Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City as live case studies to develop concepts for large-scale retail environments.
Westfield London, which covers 2.6 million sq ft and houses more than 460 stores, is Europe's largest shopping, dining and entertainment destination. Westfield Stratford City has over 315 stores and sits within the East Bank cultural district in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, alongside institutions including the London College of Fashion and the V&A Museum.
Programme structure and themes
The programme includes research, concept development and interim reviews with Westfield teams. Final proposals will be presented to Westfield, with selected concepts identified for further development or pilot projects.
Students are exploring four broad themes: the role of retail destinations as social and cultural infrastructure within cities; new models for experiential, participatory and community-led spaces; sustainable and circular approaches to large-scale commercial assets; and the integration of immersive technologies and digital layers within physical environments.
The work reflects shifts in how major destinations are positioned. Operators are under pressure to increase relevance and dwell time as consumer expectations move beyond pure retail, with large-format centres functioning as leisure, cultural and community platforms alongside traditional shopping.
Katie Wyle, Managing Director, Customer and Retail Operations Northern Europe at Westfield, said: "As customer expectations evolve, it is important that we continue to explore new ideas and perspectives that can help shape the future of our UK destinations. This collaboration with Central Saint Martins brings together emerging creative talent and practical industry expertise to examine how retail, leisure, culture and community experiences can continue to develop within major urban destinations."
Iris Ben-David, Course Leader, MA Innovation Management at Central Saint Martins, said: "This collaboration places our students at the intersection of creativity, strategy and real-world complexity. By working with Westfield, they are able to test ideas at scale, exploring how retail environments can evolve into spaces that are more socially engaged, culturally relevant and environmentally responsible."
Public exhibition in autumn 2026
The programme will culminate in a public exhibition in London in autumn 2026, showcasing selected student proposals to industry leaders, brand partners and the wider creative community. Outputs will range from long-term scenarios to near-term prototypes, offering speculative and commercially viable ideas.
The collaboration format aligns with the MA Innovation Management course structure, which includes a live client-led brief with an external partner and outward-facing end-of-course events. Central Saint Martins' alumni include celebrated designers Grace Wales Bonner, Stella McCartney, Craig Green and Kim Jones.
