Wales to reintroduce social distancing in stores after Christmas

The 2m social distancing rule for retail stores in Wales will be reintroduced after Christmas in a bid to help stem spiralling cases of Covid-19, First Minister Mark Drakeford has announced.

The Welsh leader said the measures would come into place on 27 December, along with other restrictions including the closure of night clubs and social distancing in offices and hospitality venues. Businesses must also offer workers the opportunity to work from home where possible.

In addition to social distancing, stores must reintroduce limits on the number of shoppers, as well as one-way systems and physical barriers.

Drakeford argued that the measures were proportionate, fair and necessary to fend off a “brewing storm” brought about by the Omicron variant.

"Wales is in the calm before the storm. We see the storm of Omicron coming our way and we need to prepare for it now," Drakford told the BBC's Today programme.

Welsh ministers say they will make £60m available for firms impacted by the new restrictions.

In the lead up to Christmas the Welsh Government is advising people to take lateral flow tests before socialising and heading out Christmas shopping, as well as ensuring they wear masks where required, socially distance and wash their hands. The importance of getting a booster jab has also been underscored.
