Vinted expands US presence to build on success in Europe
Vinted, the European second-hand fashion marketplace recently described as the number one ‘side hustle’ for Brits, is expanding further into the US to tap into the 50% of Americans who wear half their wardrobe - or less.
The company is starting with New York, "using the city as a real-world example of a national issue" by helping people release the value already sitting unused in their wardrobes, especially at a time when many are reassessing spending and space after the holiday season.
New research conducted this month by Vinted in partnership with GWI, surveying a nationally representative sample of 1,502 US adults, found that 42% of Americans don’t realise their old clothes have resale value, while 50% say ‘closet clutter’ stresses them out.
In New York specifically, 56% of residents say they don’t have enough closet space (32% higher than the national average), 21% have $500+ in unworn clothes, and 70% of New Yorkers aged 25-34 own at least three items they’ve never worn, with tags still attached.
Adam Jay, Vinted Marketplace CEO, said: “We’re on a mission to make second-hand the first choice, because we know there’s huge value in what’s sitting at the bottom of closets across the country.
“In Europe, we’ve spent years helping people make money from their unwanted items, and save money by buying second-hand instead of new.
"Now, we want to do the same in the US. The research shows that there’s a real opportunity for Americans to release their wardrobe and start discovering the benefits of shopping second-hand.”
This expansion follows Vinted’s strong presence in Europe, where last November, analysis from money.co.uk revealed that the platform - founded in Lithuania in 2008 - is the number one side hustle for Brits, with 84,800 UK searches from October 2024 to September 2025.
