Universal Works opens relocated Nottingham store
Following months of planning and building works, Nottingham based menswear brand Universal Works has today opened the doors to its new store at 120-122 Derby Road in its home city.
It’s a relocation to a larger space from its previous shop-in-shop above Rough Trade records at 5 Broad Street in the Hockley area of Nottingham, which closed last Sunday, taking one of the recently renovated Derby Road stores, where it will now be able to showcase a wider range of products.
David Keyte, who founded Universal Works from his kitchen table along with his wife Stephanie Porritt in 2009, having previously worked under industry legend Paul Smith, as well as designing for Maharishi, said: “Universal Works was founded in Nottingham and we’ve had a small shop in Rough Trade for six years now.
“It’s been great to be there and we’ve always enjoyed its quirky feel and sense of community. As an expanding, global business we are so are pleased to be opening the doors to a bigger, standalone store in one of Nottingham’s iconic buildings on Derby Road.
“We aren’t a high street kind of brand and prefer alternative neighbourhoods and locations with potential and community spirit. Like Rough Trade in Hockley, the Derby Road, Canning Circus area fits the bill for us.”
Universal Works joins other businesses with a community focus on Derby Road, including a new pub which opened in summer 2022 called The Whistle and Flute, formerly a menswear store of the same name, and a new restaurant called Mollis which opened in December 2022 and is the creation of Michelin Star chef, Alex Bond.
Universal Works also has two London stores, one on Berwick Street in Soho and the other at Coal Drops Yard in Kings Cross, as well as a “partnership stores” inside Liquor Store in Birmingham and Trüffelschwein in Berlin, Germany. In addition, the brand is also available at over 250 wholesale stockists worldwide.
