Global fashion retailer UNIQLO has announced its first move into the resort wear category with a new collaboration with designer Tomas Maier, which hits stores on 17 May.

The collection fuses Maier's philosophy of “time off” and “escape" and includes dresses, camisoles, a polo sweater and swimwear for women in shades of orange, yellow and other hues inspired by Florida, along with jackets, T-shirts, polo shirts and easy pants for men in shades of navy, black and khaki.

Fabrics employed in the collection include AIRism for jackets and polo shirts, extra fine cotton for shirts, Supima cotton for T-shirts and 100% cashmere for summer knits. All designs feature the Tomas Maier brand's palm tree motif.

Maier said the collection was designed to work for resort as well as downtime. “Beach attire can turn into lounge wear, casual cover-ups paired with polo shirts can easily be worn in town - this is the concept of my brand. Things work in many ways. Even if bought for a special trip or occasion the customer will soon discover these garments adapt to a year-round life,” he said.

Yuki Katsuta, Group Senior Vice President of Fast Retailing and Head of Global R&D at UNIQLO added: “We have been delighted to collaborate with Tomas Maier in creating this exciting new LifeWear range. I am sure people will love mixing and matching pieces from our first resort wear collection, adding a splash of summer fun to everyday living, weekends and vacation travel.”

German designer Maier runs his own sports-inspired luxury label and is also creative director of Kering-owned Bottega Veneta. The UNIQLO collection will launch in 19 countries and online on 17 May.
