UK retail footfall forecast to rise 8% over Platinum Jubilee bank holiday

Footfall across all UK retail destinations is forecast to rise by 8% this week compared to last week, with high streets expected to see a surge of +10%, boosted by the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee bank holiday celebrations and school half term holiday.

Shopping centres will see a jump in footfall of 7% and footfall in retail parks will rise 4%, according to a forecast by retail experts Springboard.

Last week, 22-28 May, saw a more modest rise in overall UK footfall of 2.3% compared to the week before, with high streets +2.2%, shopping centres +2.5% and retail parks +2.1%.

Diane Wehrle, Insights Director at Springboard, said: With just a modest rise in footfall last week, we are anticipating a boost this week generated by the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday combined with the school half term break.

“This is likely to be supported by weather that is forecast to be sunny on Thursday and Friday but not hugely hot, followed by cooler weather with occasional rain over the weekend, making visits to coastal towns and leisure venues on these days less appealing for many and increasing the appeal of retail destinations.”

The ongoing shift back to the office by employees for at least some days each week was illustrated by a rise in footfall in Central London of 4.1% last week compared to the week before, and footfall in city centres outside of the capital saw a 5.3% uplift.

Wehrle added: “The return of employees to the workplace appeared to accelerate last week, with noticeable increases in footfall in Central London and in Springboard's Central London "Back to the Office" benchmark, which tracks footfall in those Central London locations closest to offices, as well as in city centres outside of the capital.

“In contrast, in market towns - where a rise in footfall has become synonymous with home working - footfall remained flat from the week before, and likewise in outer London the increase in footfall was just a third of that in Central London.”
