World-renowned fashion designer and photographer Theirry Mugler died on Sunday 23 January at the age of 73.

Mugler's official account confirmed the news on Instagram, reading: "It is with deep sadness that the House of Mugler announces the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler. A visionary whose imagination as a couturier, perfumer and image-maker empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger every day."

His agent confirmed that the designer had died of natural causes, adding that he had been due to announce new collaborations this week.

The fashion division of Mugler was originally retired in 2002 but was later reintroduced in 2010 under the direction of stylist Nicola Formichetti. Mugler himself returned to the brand in 2013 as Creative Advisor.

Mugler was known for his line of fragrances, including the incredibly successful perfumes Angel and Alien, launched in 1992 and 2005 respectively.

The LGBTQ community was a frequent source of inspiration for the designer, with Mugler frequently collaborating with drag artists, taking inspiration from club kid culture, and even casting trans models in his runway shows during the 1980s.

In his later years, Mugler dressed the biggest names in fashion including David Bowie, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé.
