The Modist closes permanently due to COVID-19 crisis

The Modist, the trailblazing luxury site for modest fashion, has closed down permanently citing the challenges of the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis.

Established three years ago by entrepreneur Ghizlan Guenez, the e-commerce platform sought to tap into the exploding demand for modest fashion globally, as women turned to the style of dressing for religious and other reasons.

It was launched on International Women's Day in March 2017 with an edit of designer and premium labels, such as Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Marni and more. A year later it introduced its own label Layeur and went on to secure backing from investor Vaultier7, Farfetch and Nicola Bulgari.

In an Instagram post the company said: "We regret to inform you that the global crisis that has hit the world has left our young business vulnerable with no option but to cease trading."

The post continued: "We are [grateful] to the fashion industry that embraced The Modist from the very beginning including our incredible brand partners, media and everyone who has been part of our journey."

In a recent interview with TheIndustry.fashion, Guenez said of the business: "The Modist had spearheaded the conversation on modesty and planted a stick in the ground to make space for this genre of fashion and more importantly to represent its woman beautifully in this space."
