The Interview: Hayley Sullivan on bringing her tech-enabled styling service The Styled By Collective to the UK
LA-based, stylist and tastemaker Hayley Sullivan is bringing her The Styled By Collective platform to the UK. The platform blends technology with a personalised concierge service to deliver an elevated and personalised wardrobe building and management service to high-net-worth individuals.
Sullivan talks to TheIndustry, fashion about how she has identified an opportunity to serve a customer that is over-whelmed with choice and under-served with personalisation. She talks about her career path that took her from Fortune 500 technology businesses to personal styling, and how losing all of her belongings in the LA fires solidified her belief in consciously building a wardrobe through strategy and reflection, rather than on impulse and trends.
Welcome to the UK market. Before we get into your launch here, can you tell us a bit about your backstory? You spent a decade in tech. What drew you to that field and what were the highlights?
I spent over a decade in enterprise technology, working with Fortune 500 companies to solve complex, high-stakes challenges. I was drawn to the way systems influence behavior and how thoughtful design can create meaningful outcomes. I thrived in architecting scalable solutions and leading cross-functional teams—often in rooms where women with creative perspectives were few. That experience sharpened my ability to scale ideas with precision, build trust quickly, and distill complexity into actionable strategies. All of which now shapes how we translate personal style into systems that serve our clients’ lives.
You clearly have a strong personal sense of style and a deep love of fashion. At what point did you realize you wanted to merge that with your tech background to build your own venture?
Style is a first impression—it conveys identity before a word is spoken. But in today’s landscape, the abundance of choice and over-reliance on algorithms have made the experience chaotic rather than expressive. I started helping friends simplify their wardrobes and saw how transformational that clarity could be. I wanted to create a space where clients could articulate their preferences, shop with intention, and receive suggestions that actually align with how they live. Our vision includes enabling clients to share their digital wardrobes with retailers to drive relevant, curated recommendations. Unlike cookie-based tracking, this fosters a two-way dialogue between clients and their preferred brands—grounded in real inventory and authentic identity.
How did you get the business off the ground, and what did it look like at launch?
The Styled by Collective launched as a boutique private client styling firm, supporting a tight circle of U.S.-based clients. I manually built digital wardrobes and provided white-glove styling—seasonal edits, event looks, travel capsules. It started as a personal passion. Over time, we developed our proprietary platform to enhance the process without losing its bespoke nature. Today, we offer global styling services enabled by a tech platform designed to bring consistency, clarity, and personalization to a space that’s often fragmented.
You’ve said that luxury consumers are overwhelmed by choice but underserved by personalization. Did that insight resonate with your clients early on?
Immediately. Our clients are discerning, high-performing individuals with full lives and little time. They crave simplicity and alignment. Many arrive with unopened packages, endless browser tabs, or wardrobes that no longer reflect their current identity. Our approach simplifies decision-making while helping them reconnect with their style. We’re not selling for the sake of it—we start with what they already own. For our Elite members, that means real-time styling, even at 8pm on a Tuesday. We build digital lookbooks tailored to lifestyle and needs. We also analyze returns to flag recurring patterns—a client might always send back mini dresses, even if aspirationally drawn to them. That human insight refines their style far beyond what an algorithm can offer.
Can you give us a sense of who your clients are and how you support them?
We serve a private network of founders, executives, creatives, philanthropists, public figures, and working parents. Some are navigating visibility in the spotlight. Others are in transition—stepping into new roles or re-entering the workforce. Our support spans wardrobe audits, sourcing, bridal styling, and editorial direction. We help them express their identity with clarity, whether on stage or in their everyday lives.
Tell us more about how your service works and how technology supports it.
Every client is paired with a stylist and concierge. We begin by digitizing their wardrobe and crafting a long-term style roadmap. Our proprietary platform functions as a visual wardrobe, personalized shopping tool, and digital lookbook. Clients can track what they own, receive curated recommendations, and get styled from anywhere. But it’s the human layer that sets it apart. We remember the nuances—preferred fits, flattering tones, and life-stage evolutions. The technology makes it efficient. The team makes it personal.
What kind of feedback have you received and how has the service changed the way your clients shop?
The most common feedback we hear is: “I feel more like myself.” Clients stop buying out of confusion and start shopping with intention. They dress with ease and confidence. We’ve seen clients with wardrobes full of aspirational pieces that didn’t reflect their lifestyle—like one client who collected Saint Laurent blazers but lived on a rural farm. She never wore them. Now, her wardrobe reflects how she actually lives. That shift is core to what we do.
How do you collaborate with brands to offer priority access to your clients?
We’ve built trusted relationships with boutiques, distributors, and fashion houses that value our clientele. That gives us access to pre-orders, limited editions, and exclusives before they reach the broader market. Because we are brand agnostic, our recommendations are rooted entirely in the client’s long-term strategy. We operate with discretion, precision, and purpose.
Do you help clients sell or donate pieces they no longer use?
Yes. We manage resale through vetted consignment partners and coordinate donations aligned with each client’s values. It’s not just about editing—it’s about recalibrating the wardrobe to reflect who they are now and what matters to them.
You lost your home in the LA fires and said it cemented your vision for building a wardrobe with purpose. Can you tell us more about that and how it shaped your approach?
It was a profound loss. We lost everything. Rebuilding my wardrobe from scratch made me question what truly matters. I took my time, choosing with care—what reflected me, what had meaning. That moment clarified my philosophy: wardrobes should reflect the present self, not the past or passing trends. It also showcased the practical value of our technology. I could send a full digital inventory to our insurer with one click. That functionality has since become a formalized part of our software.
You’re now in the UK. What drew you to this market specifically?
Demand from UK clients began well before we officially launched. The British consumer is globally minded, values quality and subtlety, and embraces storytelling in style—all traits that align with our philosophy. The UK retail ecosystem offers a rich environment for thoughtful innovation.
Do you expect the service to look different for UK-based clients?
The essence of our offering remains the same: elevated, personalized, discreet. The UK’s cultural values—privacy, refinement, and restraint—mirror how we operate. While we’ll localize some nuances, the core experience will remain consistent.
Have you hired specifically for the UK?
We are currently building a senior team in London to serve local clients and foster deeper partnerships with stylists and vendors. Having a culturally fluent team on the ground is essential. We’re excited to formally launch with a London-native lead by the end of summer.
Is global expansion part of the plan and what are your next ambitions?
Absolutely. Our mission is to become the connective tissue between digital wardrobes and physical retail. The rest of Europe is next, followed by the Middle East and Asia. We’re evolving our tools to empower clients, stylists, and retailers with greater clarity and less friction—helping people feel more like themselves every time they get dressed.
Potential UK customers are now invited to apply to use the service at www.thestyledbycollective.com with only a limited number of clients accepted each season.
