Britain’s summer racing calendar is driving a surge in occasionwear demand, with new data from Debenhams Group revealing increased searches and sales across race day fashion categories.

The figures, covering activity across Debenhams, Karen Millen and PrettyLittleThing, show that major racing events including Royal Ascot, the Epsom Derby and the Debenhams July Festival have encouraged shoppers to invest in occasionwear looks, from dresses and fascinators to statement accessories.

At Debenhams, searches for “dresses for the races” rose 70% month-on-month in June, while searches for “race day dresses” increased 45%. Race day page views also climbed 66%, with more than 13,000 searches recorded for fascinators and hats during the month.

Karen Millen saw demand for finishing touches increase, with fascinator sales rising 120% month-on-month and occasion jewellery sales growing 30%. Shoppers also showed interest in trend-led styles, with searches for pleated dresses increasing 66%, embellished dresses rising 60% and polka dot dresses up 44%.

Ahead of Royal Ascot, searches for white dresses on Karen Millen increased 81% week-on-week, alongside growing interest in jumpsuits and dresses in shades of pink, black and blue.

Meanwhile, PrettyLittleThing customers embraced a more contemporary approach to race day dressing, with florals, lemon tones, chiffon and satin emerging as key trends alongside pastel shades, corsetry, lace and peplum details.

A Debenhams Group spokesperson said: “When it comes to the races, shoppers aren’t just looking for a dress - they’re planning an entire look, from statement fascinators to jewellery and shoes.”

“While classic occasionwear remains popular, we’re also seeing shoppers embrace brighter colours, statement accessories and more trend-led styling, showing how race day fashion continues to evolve.”

The data highlights the continued importance of major cultural and sporting events in driving fashion spending, with occasions such as Royal Ascot creating seasonal peaks for occasionwear retailers. As consumers become more selective with their purchases, brands are increasingly looking to these moments as opportunities to inspire wardrobe updates and boost demand.
