StockX sees trend for slip-on shoes gain momentum

StockX, the US-based online resale marketplace for sneakers, apparel and accessories, has reported that the laceless and slip-on shoe trend is "rapidly gaining popularity".

Brands such as New Balance, Asics and Hoka are tapping into the demand for easy-to-wear footwear, with loafer inspired models such as the New Balance 1906 – currently trading in seven colourways on StockX – leading the way.

Luxury brands are also getting in on the slip-on trend, teaming up with top footwear names to attract the Gen Z market, which values both comfort and style.

In 2024, Asics partnered with Cecile Bahnsen, while Crocs collaborated with Simone Rocha, resulting in "triple-digit price premiums on StockX", with prices jumping from $250 to $400.

The 2023 Nike x Martine Rose mule has also maintained a solid premium and steady resale prices on the platform, further reflecting the ongoing trend.

As StockX sees a shift in the most popular footwear silhouettes, there's also a growing demand for more experimental, yet comfortable choices, often falling under the ‘ugly’ shoe category.

Slip-on footwear is also becoming bolder in its designs, appealing to customers seeking "avant-garde or statement pieces". Crocs, often regarded as the ‘ugly’ shoe pioneer, has maintained its position as the second best-selling show on StockX due to its character-inspired releases and collaborations.

The Crocs ‘Mater Clog’ (released in October 2023) surpasses all previous Crocs collaborations in terms of release-week trades, and the Crocs x Shrek (released in September 2023) has hit over 11,000 trades to date.

Vans has also seen a resurgence, with search increases up to 355% on StockX, while Ugg has held its place as the top selling brand on the platform for two years running. The Ugg ‘Tasman Chestnut’, released in 2021, has seen over 25,000 trades and remains a key player in the market.

The latest StockX update on key footwear trends follows on from the release of its Big Facts Report 2025 earlier this month, revealing the bestselling and fastest-growing brands of 2024, as well as its resale predictions for 2025.
